Crystallization Technologies

Crystallization is a technology to solidify and separate a chemical compound that is dissolved in liquid solvent. This technology has various applications and uses in many industrial areas. The objective may be to obtain a pure liquid or to produce solid, crystalline product. Crystallization can be used also as purifying technology to produce high-grade products such as lithium or nickel salts.

The choice of crystallizer type depends on the crystallization behavior of the solute such as shape of solubility curve, crystal growth rate, nucleation rate etc. Also product requirements, like desired crystal size and purity are parameters that are taken into consideration when selecting the most suitable process for the material in question.

Ecoplanning provides crystallization solution with various types of crystallization technologies, such as:

  • Draft tube crystallizer
  • Draft tube — baffle crystallizer
  • Evaporative FC crystallizer
  • Flash cooling crystallizer
  • Surface cooling crystallizer
  • Vapor recompression proccesses (TVR, MVR)
  • Batch / continuous processes

Industrial areas:

Some industry segments, where Ecoplanning crystallization technologies are applied, are highlighted as follows:

Fertilizer industry:

Crystallization of AMS (ammonium sulfate), NOP (potassium nitrate), MAP (mono ammonium phosphate), DAP (di-ammonium phosphate).

Metallurgical industry:

Crystallization of metal sulfates such as copper, zinc and nickel sulfate, lithium products such as lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, lithium chloride and lithium sulfate, by-product recovery such as sodium sulfate, ammonium sulfate.

Chemical industry:

Crystallization application for various inorganic products, such as Glauber’s salt, anhydrous sodium sulfate, sodium chloride etc.

Pigment & Dye Industry:

Crystallization and filtering of ferrous sulfate from the spent sulfuric acid used in the production process of titanium dioxide pigment. Purified and concentrated acid is returned to the TiO2 process.

Ash treatment:

Ash crystallization for selective recovery of valuable process chemicals from ashes from combustion processes. Recovered and purified chemicals can be returned back into the recovery cycle or safely disposed.

ZLD processes:

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) processes can be applied in any industry when minimizing the liquid discharges from the plant and to control site’s internal water balance. Dissolved solids are crystallized and either disposed or re-used and valuable water resources are recycled within the site.
