Meeting a Growing Demand Through Methane Pyrolysis Technology
KBR will deliver an innovative clean hydrogen solution in collaboration with Hazer Group
The growing need for clean power and sustainable fuels globally is expected to result in an exponential rise in the demand for hydrogen as a key feedstock. To provide a cost-effective, low-carbon clean hydrogen solution, KBR will be the exclusive global licensor of Hazer’s methane pyrolysis technology.
This technology offers a promising pathway for clean hydrogen production by efficiently converting natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon without emitting CO₂. Market segments compatible with this technology are diverse, including the ammonia and methanol markets, which will experience surging demand in the coming decades. This innovative approach complements existing clean hydrogen technologies and enhances the portfolio of KBR’s sustainable energy solutions available globally.
This methane pyrolysis technology delivers hydrogen and co-produced graphitic carbon from methane with negligible CO2 emissions. The co-produced graphitic carbon offers a significant economic upside, supplying high-value and high-volume markets with a sustainable graphite alternative. KBR is working with Hazer to upscale the technology for commercial deployment and to enhance clean hydrogen production capacity to over 50,000 tons per annum.
According to Hari Ravindran, SVP and Global Head, Technology Solutions: “KBR is committed to helping customers transition to clean energy solutions and the methane pyrolysis technology jointly developed with Hazer provides a low-carbon hydrogen production process that perfectly aligns with our long-term strategic objectives. With this offering, we are looking forward to addressing the growing global demand for hydrogen and the decarbonization goals of our customers.”
KBR’s ammonia technology has been used in more than 260 grassroots plants since 1944 and has maintained its leadership by optimizing energy efficiency and minimizing CO2 emissions. Moreover, our methanol technology plant based has been operational in Latin America for three decades and our PureM℠ e-methanol technology is positioned to play a significant role in the growing methanol market.
