Most existing coal gasification technologies perform best on high rank (bituminous) coal and petroleum refinery waste products but are inefficient, less reliable, and expensive to operate when processing low rank coal. KBR's technology effectively handles low-cost, low-rank coals including sub-bituminous coal and lignites that make up half the proven worldwide coal reserves which might otherwise remain underutilized as energy sources due to high moisture and ash contents. KBR's Transport Gasifier (also known as TRIG™) was designed with these low-rank coals in mind.
Derived from our Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) technology, currently in use in over 160 grassroots and revamp units worldwide, TRIG is a simple and robust design that offers a reliable method for processing low grade coal in a cost-effective and efficient way. In the KBR process, the moisture actually serves as a useful reactant, and ash is recovered in solid form rather than as a molten slag. The TRIG process unlocks the true potential of low rank coal by efficiently converting it to high quality synthesis gas for a wide variety of energy and chemicals applications.
