Coal Gasification

One of the most promising methods for power generation and chemical production is coal gasification. The KBR Transport Gasifier™ (also known as TRIG™) transforms coal into clean energy for power generation, hydrogen for refining and captured CO₂ for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in mature fields. KBR's Transport Gasifier effectively handles low rank coals, which account for half of the worldwide coal reserves. These coals might otherwise remain uneconomical as energy sources due to high moisture and ash contents.

Our Transport Gasifier technology, derived from our fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) technology, helps to economically tap this valuable resource, eliminating some of coal's harmful effects. Currently we are working with Southern Company and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under the Clean Coal Power Initiative (CCPI) to commercialize this technology, which has been tested on a semi-commercial scale since 1996.
