Consider new technology to produce 'clean' diesel

Demand for diesel and jet fuel is expected to grow, and many refiners are actively focused on the shifting demand from motor gasoline to diesel. While still analyzing possible options, some refining projects will require significant capital investment. The future of diesel fuel is a topic of much speculation. In markets dominated by fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) - based refineries, the need to increase distillate production has taken on a new dimension, posing interesting challenges, while presenting some unique opportunities.

Floatover Installations on the Rise

An offshore installation method that is nearly 30 years old is generating renewed interest from many operators who are challenged with designing heavy-lift crane installations. According to global engineering company KBR, the floatover installation method is experiencing a steady surge in new contracts, particularly for platforms in remote locations with very heavy topsides.

KBR is one of the pioneers of the floatover installation method, initiating research as far back as 1977 for the North Sea market. The company envisioned developing floatovers as a cheaper and more flexible alternative to heavy-lift installations.

LNG Liquefaction Not All Plants Are Created Equal

As the LNG industry has matured, there is often an inclination to compare the successes and challenges among projects over time. Many publications have fallen into the habit of using a specific cost term of "dollars (USD) per ton of annual LNG production" as an indicator for comparing the engineering and execution skills of owners, licensors and contractors. This dollar per annual ton benchmark, commonly abbreviated as "dollars per ton" is highly dependent on site specific factors.

LNG Technology for the Commercially Minded

As the LNG industry continues to grow there is a steady influx of new players in the business. Most would classify themselves as technical or commercial with respect to their primary responsibilities, and for better or for worse, most have little exposure to the other discipline. Thus, there are process engineers with little understanding of the financial terms and conditions of a project, and commercial people who may understand technical aspects of their specific project but may not be aware of other available processing options.

Natural Gas Specification Challenges in the LNG Industry

LNG is primarily methane, but in most cases also contains ethane, propane and heavier components. Until recently potential buyers of LNG had some flexibility in the ranges of natural gas properties they were able to accept. In many cases the LNG buyer exported electric power and not natural gas, and therefore did not have to meet the needs of natural gas consumers. But now new markets are opening up where pipelines to consumers already exist, and the consumers have specifications which lie outside the range of the LNG produced at many locations.

Processing Considerations for Carbon Capture & Storage

As Industry and the public at large focus its attention on Carbon Capture and Storage as a means of stabilising and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, there are still only a few facilities world-wide in which this technology is actively being practiced. Operating facilities include the Sleipner, Norway and the In Salah Gas Algeria developments. In the latter in excess of 1 million tonnes per year of CO2 is compressed and injected into a subterranean aquifer.

This paper discusses some of the features of CO2 capture facility design that are peculiar to carbon dioxide. This includes selection of gas drying, compression and piping systems, and their optimization.
