BE&K's Southern Company Generation Plant wins ABC Excellence Award

BE&K's Southern Company Generation Plant Franklin project (Franklin III), Smiths Station, Ala., has taken top honors this year, winning an ABC Excellence Award at the state level in the Industrial Category for projects in the $25M - $99M range. The contract spanned over 17 months achieving mechanical completion over two weeks ahead of schedule.

The Franklin III project included the completion of installation of a two-on-one combined cycle power generating plant, which had previously been deferred in mid-project. Unit III was installed adjacent to two similar operating units. The work included the completion of two GE 7FA combustion turbines and two Deltak, three-pressure level, heat recovery steam generators and the installation of one Alstom model STF30c steam turbine-generator, and all the required peripheral items to allow for a fully functioning power generating facility with a nominal generating capacity of 620MW, integrated with the two existing units.

BE&K served as the general contractor for Southern Company Generation on this project, provided construction and procurement services, with the Owner supplying the engineering and most of the equipment. The project required more than 500,000 work-hours to complete.
