KBR Completes Installation of Score™ Ethylene Technology at BP'S Chocolate Bayou Olefins Complex

Expansion project includes world’s largest operating flexible feedstock SCORE furnaces

HOUSTON – Sep. 28, 2005 - KBR has successfully completed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), and is supplying start-up and operations support services for a major expansion to Innovene’s, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BP, largest single olefins site at Chocolate Bayou, just south of downtown Houston. Using KBR’s Selective Cracking Optimum REcovery (SCORE™) ethylene process, the expansion project adds 650 million pounds per year of ethylene capacity to the site, making it one of the largest olefins capacity expansions in North America in 2005. The project successfully produced prime product within just 26 hours of feedstock being introduced. KBR is the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton (NYSE:HAL).

The expansion project includes the design and erection of the world’s largest operating flexible feedstock KBR SCORE furnaces, which will provide Innovene the highest achievable ethylene yields in the industry, and sets a new industry benchmark for nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions by lowering NOx emissions from olefins plants by 80 to 90 percent.  Additionally, the attendant pipe racks were modularized, with detailed design completed at KBR’s Engineering Center in Monterrey, Mexico, and fabricated by KBR at the Greens Bayou Fabrication Yard in Houston, Texas.

“KBR’s innovative SCORE technology, which incorporates ExxonMobil ethylene knowledge and operating experience, provides the best yields in the industry from any feedstock, in an environment of proven operation by a leader in olefins production,” said Tim Challand, vice president of Technology for KBR Energy and Chemicals. “KBR is pleased to be part of this project that underscores BP’s commitment to the environment and the local community.”

Benefits of SCORE for gas cracking include high conversion operation with less recycle and fewer byproducts, allowing for increased production in the future without modifications. The new furnaces are feedstock flexible, allowing different feeds to be processed simultaneously in the same furnace.

KBR also received a best-in-class project safety record during the expansion, recording approximately 3.8 million home office and construction work hours and an OSHA Recordable Incident Rate of only 0.10, with no lost-time incidents.

KBR is a global engineering, construction, technology and services company. Whether designing an LNG facility, serving as a defense industry contractor or providing capital construction, KBR delivers world-class service and performance.
